Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state is one of the metropolitan cities in India with more than 15000000 population. The area occupied is as much as 1.800 km^2. It is ranked 3rd in population among metropolitan cities. The city is known to be one of the first cities in our country that introduced Metro services for faster transportation. It is also known world wide for the grand celebration of Durga festival.
Way back in the 19th century, Kolkata was one of the major cities where the Independence movement gained response and people started gathering to lead the movement against British rule. It is also the first city where tram line was introduced. The city was and is playing a vital role in the growth of our country. Many famous personalities who have earned fame world wide in fields such as Literature, Sports, Cinema, Philosophy etc are originated from West Bengal. To name a few, Satyajit Ray, Aparna Sen, Rabindranath Tagore, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Swami Vivekananda, Abanindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Sourav Ganguly many others.
